beach clean up in haiti

waste is likely the hardest topic to discuss when it comes to haiti, because even though the people are very resourceful with second chances for discarded materials (did you see ishmael’s toy car?), there are still MOUNDS OF WASTE that line the country’s streets and coastlines, and unlike in most of the US, the waste cannot be conveniently hauled away into an abyss known to many of us as ‘away’. the site of trash throughout the country was heart wrenching, but to complain about the lack of waste infrastructure would be a privilege. and so my linesisters and i completed a BEACH CLEAN UP, where we filled a 30-POUND bag with beach trash. plastic bottles, which are recyclable in the US, took up 85% of the bag. less than 15% of the bag was ‘trash’ and if that small percentage could be designed with biodegradable materials, like algae, WASTE COULD BECOME OBSOLETE, again.  when we finished filling the bag, more waste started to roll on to the beach. reminding us that our beach clean up, though helpful, is only the tip of the iceberg.
